Jodie Sweetin Enjoys Family Life After Struggling Through Hardships And Addiction

“Full House” was a highly loved American sitcom that was on television from 1987 to 1995. Over the course of the series, fans were able to watch the characters – and many of the stars who played them – grow up. The show followed widowed father Danny Tanner, played by the late Bob Saget, seeking the help from his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis and Joey Gladstone, played by John Stamos and Dave Coulier respectively.

Together, they raised Danny’s three daughters: D.J., Stephanie and Michelle. While Candance Cameron took on the role of the eldest daughter, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen teamed up to play Michelle together and Jodie Sweetin played the role of Stephanie.

The series was a massive success and helped show families ways to cope with grief, learn from their mistakes and find new and fun ways to bond together. It was such a success that it even launched a sequel series more than 20 years later called “Fuller House,” with the majority of the main cast members returning. The sequel series ended in 2020.

While “Full House” showed many of the wonderful moments families have together, it also helped people learn how to work through tough situations. This is something that came in handy for Sweetin, as she went through some hardships following her time after the end of “Full House.” Fortunately, Sweetin is in a better place now and is continuing to regain her footing in the acting world. Read on to find out more about what the actress’ life and career looks like today.

Sweetin was born on Jan. 19, 1982, in Los Angeles, California. She was adopted and raised by her uncle and his second wife. When she was still extremely young, Sweetin began appearing in several television commercials and was cast in a guest role in the 1987 sitcom “Valerie.” Shortly afterward, she was cast as Stephanie Tanner on “Full House.”

“Full House” was an incredibly beloved sitcom that followed the lives of a somewhat unconventional family. The main character was widowed father Danny Tanner, played by Bob Saget. Enlisting the help of his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopoilis , played by John Stamos, and his childhood best friend Joey Gladstone, played by Dave Coulier, Danny did his best to raise his three daughters – DJ, Stephanie and Michelle – and teach them many valuable life lessons along the way. Another notable star from the show was Lori Loughlin, who played Uncle Jesse’s wife Becky.

The sitcom aired from September 1987 to May 1995, broadcasting a total of 192 episodes. Although the series didn’t receive a ton of critical praise during its time – albeit also not a lot of criticism – it has become a very popular and nostalgic childhood favorite for fans today.

The show also helped launch the careers of many of its stars, especially the child stars, as they were prepared for the real world of acting that lay ahead of them. The show was instrumental in catapulting Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen into stardom, and also helped lay the groundwork for future careers for Candance Cameron, Andrea Barber (who played Kimmy) and of course for Sweetin.

Sweetin was able to keep up with her school work during this time and graduated from high school in 1999. She had even performed in musical theater productions alongside fellow actor Matthew Mirroson, who is best known for his role in the series “Glee.” Afterward, Sweetin went on to attend Chapman University in Orange, California.

The actress had taken a bit of a break from acting following her time on “Full House” while she went to school, but made her return to television by hosting the second season of the dance competition show “Pants-Off Dance-Off” in the mid-2000s. She went on to appear in several other projects around this time, but nothing really took off as much as her work on the family sitcom that brought her fame.

On top of that, life wasn’t always as amazing as one might think it would be for such a popular actress. According to E! News, “Full House” was canceled in 1995, although it was still in the top 25 rated shows at the top. Sweetin was just 13 years old at the time, and had been playing the character of Stephanie ever since she was 5. It was a huge adjustment for the young star, and sadly, she struggled to figure out which path to take next.

Sweetin talked more about her past and what it was like during this progressional time in her career in her 2009 memoir “unSweetined.” She had taken a dark turn and began using substances. “I probably had two bottles of wine, and I was only 14,” Sweetin explained, talking about what it was like on the night of co-star Cameron’s wedding.

While Sweetin once thought she may never appear on television again, the actress was able to find her love for acting once again. She has since gone on to appear in a handful of film and television shows in small roles. She also competed on shows such as “Dancing with the Stars,” “Worst Cooks in America,” “Beyond the Edge” and on the second season of “Name That Tune.”

The actress later reprised her role as Stephanie on the Netflix series “Fuller House” from 2016 to 2020. The show was created to be a continuation of “Full House,” but this time DJ was the main character and enlisted the help of her childhood best friend Kimmy and her sister Stephanie to help raise her three sons.

Good times and hard times ensued as the family learned to balance their busy lives together, all while helping the younger characters learn and grow. Although the show starred many of its original cast members, including Saget, Stamos, Coulier and Cameron, it received mixed reviews and ultimately ended in 2020 after five seasons.

However, the show helped reunite many of the original co-stars, and according to People, they began spending more quality time with one another. Sweetin talked with the news outlet about just how special the bond she shares with her cast members really is. “We’re together all the time,” she said. The actress even mentioned that the media was interested in seeing when she and Coulier’s wife went shopping together! “Not only are we all really close but our families are close,” Sweetin added. “It’s pretty cool.”

As someone who has so much history with the show “Full House,” it’s no surprise that when Saget passed away on Jan. 9, 2022, Sweetin – along with the rest of the world – was left completely heartbroken. During an interview the month after Saget’s death, Sweetin opened up about just how much she learned from her on-screen dad.

Sweetin said, “The first couple weeks were really hard. It was such a shock. As you can see in my office, I have reminders of him everywhere.” According to TODAY, she motioned to numerous framed “Full House” and “Fuller House”cast photos that lined the walls in her home office. “Every day he’s just a part of my life,” Sweetin added.

The actress talked about how she connected with many of her former co-stars as well as several members of Saget’s family, including his wife Kelly Rizzo and his three daughters.

“There was a lot of laughter,” Sweetin said. “There was a lot of ridiculous storytelling. And there was a lot of talking about Bob, which is all that he really ever really wanted, which was for everyone to be talking about him. He knew he was loved but I don’t think he had any idea that he was this beloved by so many people.”

It’s clear that their on-screen father-daughter relationship panned out well in real life, too. “I remember Bob always being funny and warm and kind to us kids, to everyone,” Sweetin explained, reminiscing on their days on set together. “He really was like the glue that held us all together, in a lot of ways. He was kind of the head figure of that little family.”

Nowadays, Sweetin is continuing to find work as an actress and is showing just how far she’s come. In 2021, she starred in the romantic comedy “Just Swipe,” which showcases online dating during unprecedented times. According to TODAY, Sweetin has a happy love story in her real life as well, as she became engaged to her partner Mescal Wasilewski in January 2022.

According to CNN, this will be Sweetin’s fourth marriage. She was married to Shaun Holguin from 2002 to 2006, Cody Herpin from 2007 to 2010 and to Morty Coyle from 2012 to 2016.

Sweetin uploaded a heartwarming Instagram post to commemorate the special occasion. In the post, she wrote, “I love you Mescal, for always. You’re my person. I can’t wait to see the life that lies ahead for us.”

Talking more about her recent engagement, the actress said, “It’s wonderful.” Sweetin’s family also approves. She explained, “My kids love him. My parents love him. We have a really great little family dynamic here.”

It’s safe to say that Sweetin has come a long way since her “Full House” days. Today, she is 40 years old and is absolutely beautiful. On top of that, she also has continued to have a great career and is definitely staying busy. According to IMDB, she is also set to star in the upcoming TV movie “A Cozy Christmas Inn,” which is currently in its post-production stage and will air in late 2022. We can’t wait to see what else this former “Full House” actress will do next!
